As 2010 has come and gone we have seen two very different formats due to extensive ban lists in March and September. These changes were accentuated as the most used card in the game, Heavy Storm had to be compensated for its banning with other various spell and trap hate such as Cold Wave and Trap Stun. The question is what the new format will bring to competitive duelling this year. The current format forces many decks to follow a set play style. This generally entails keeping back row support for your monsters and destroying or preventing your opponent’s spell and trap cards in return. As we will see the new format unfold, many of the commonly used strategies and play styles used by the top decks may have to change drastically to combat new decks that are coming out through new booster packs (namely six samurai). Many other archetypes will have new support in just a few months. This makes it very hard to predict which decks are likely to consistently succeed in the near future. Over the last few weeks I have immersed myself in the OCG equivalent of the game to help completely research all the varying new decks that I think will have a chance of being competitive. I have also previewed many of the decks being played presently.
CURRENT DECKS
X-Sabers: at the moment I believe X-Sabers are still going to be a tier 1 deck for at least another format even if Konami finally sees some sense and semi-limits a Darksoul or Faultroll. It is highly likely that X-Sabers will also stay as one of the most popular decks as there has been rumours of Emmersblade or Darksoul being released in the next Gold Series.
VERDICT: Will stay as one of the top decks.
Blackwings: should stay consistently up in the top tier of decks even with a slight possibility of Kalut at one or two. New support in soon to be released Crow and Ragnarock packs should make up for any losses.
NEW SUPPORT (STOR): Blackwing - Bora the Sharp, Blackwing - Alizé the Tailwind, Blackwing - Calm the Shimmer. (DP11): Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite, Blackwing – Jet the Blue Sky.
VERDICT: Will stay as one of the top four decks.
Machina: Stranded as no new releases will be seen and will most likely slip to an average tier 2 deck.
VERDICT: In decline.
Gravekeeper’s: Should stay the same without any new support packs or ban lists likely to have them listed. Still unpredictable since we have only seen them at one big tournament.
VERDICT: uncertain, 50/50.
Stun: Has seen little play although always going to be consistent against the usual strategies put in place by the big swarm builds.
VERDICT: Will be consistently good.
Plant Synchro/ Quickdraw: Will most likely be hit hardest of all if Dandylion is banned or limited.
VERDICT: Success depends primarily on the March ban list.
Scraps: Very limited showings at any YCS so far. Will see two, new main deck cards to support the build. This will greatly help improve their chances of a major showing.
NEW SUPPORT (STOR): Scrap Worm, Scrap Shark, Atomic Scrap Dragon.
VERDICT: Looking good.
Lightsworn: This is the beginning of a new era for this popular archetype as it is slowly recovering from extensive ban list hits. We may even see Lumina at two!
VERDICT: Will see better days after the March ban list.
NEW DECKS TO HIT THE SCENE IN FEBRUARY!
Fabled World: Not competitive until HA4 comes out with much needed new support.
NEW SUPPORT (HA4): The Fabled Chawa, The Fabled Catsith, The Fabled Cerburrel, The Fabled Ganashia, The Fabled Nozoochee, The Fabled Unicore.
VERDICT: Tier 2 at best, however the future looks promising!
Dragunities: Following their huge success in the OCG, it will be highly likely we will see similar results in the TCG especially if the structure deck is released bringing the important spell and trap support. Either way HA4 should bring in the much needed support monsters as they obviously cannot be run competitively at the moment.
NEW SUPPORT (HA4): Dragunity Militum, Dragunity Primus Pilus, Dragunity Brandistock, Dragunity Javelin, Dragunity Knight – Trident.
VERDICT: Worth taking a look at.
Six Samurai: OMG! When I went through the OCG releases in Storm of Ragnarock I quickly realised this could in fact be the next tier 0 deck! They will be unbeatable until they will surely be banned up appropriately. Super expensive and with its massive power plays, it reminds me of Tele-DAD.
NEW SUPPORT (STOR): Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki, Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan, Legendary Six Samurai – Shinai, Legendary Six Samurai – Mizuho.
VERDICT: Will top.
